Connecting Contemporary Workplace to the Outdoors

CMG began working with Meta in 2011 to design Classic Campus—the first site of their new Headquarters in Menlo Park—reflecting the company’s values of openness and transparency. In 2012, we began our collaboration with Gehry Partners to imagine the Bayfront Campus, an 80-acre underutilized brownfield site adjacent to Classic Campus. Meta Headquarters is centered on the design principles of outdoor programming, connecting to nature, and inspiring social life within new public spaces. The campus is a cinematic experience, choreographing movement throughout Classic and Bayfront Campus’s immersive garden spaces and stunning vistas.

The development converts an impervious and sterile site into a network of civic spaces and landscapes that increase community connectivity, provide public access, and create habitat. Our ongoing relationships enrich the campus design over time through observation and feedforward cycles. Resilience is approached through tree diversification, developing succession planting, implementing stormwater and blackwater systems, and the creation of Phytophthora guidelines for nurseries. Strategies for integrating landscape systems with the building design are a result of intensive design and technical coordination.

As work culture shifts, the campus adapts. It encourages curiosity, exploration, and connection to nature, fostering well-being and respect for the environment and appreciation for beauty of life around us. The transformation unites architecture and ecology, weaving encounters with nature into daily life.
