It was an amazing opportunity to share our work and ideas with our colleagues and friends at the AIA Conference on Architecture ’23. We dived into a few of our climate and socially resilient projects in the Bay Area—Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground, San Francisco Waterfront Resilience Program, and Mission Creek Stormwater Park.

Waterfront Resilience: Adaptation Strategies for Flood & Seismic Risks

Principal Kevin Conger spoke about the Port of San Francisco’s Waterfront Resilience Program (WRP) that aims to improve the waterfront while mitigating flood and earthquake risks through large-scale coastal adaptations. The panel—including Samantha Rose (TEF Design), Guneet Anand (SITELAB Urban Studio), and Adam Varat (Port of San Francisco)—highlighted the adaptation strategies being considered by the WRP team and stakeholders to address the diverse vulnerabilities, topography, and historic development along the San Francisco waterfront.

International Waterfronts Workshop On-the-Water Sailing Yacht Voyage

CMG set sail on the San Francisco Bay to survey a host of new waterfront projects. Part of the AIA SF Waterfronts series and symposium, Principal Kevin Conger led a discussion about planning waterfronts through a lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion, designing for health and life safety, and transitioning former industrial sites into public spaces and neighborhoods.

Chinatown: Sustaining Cultural Identity & Place

Principal Willett Moss led a tour of San Francisco’s Chinatown with Jensen Architects’ Emily Gosack, and Chinatown Community Development Center’s Malcolm Yeung, Tan Chow, and Rosa Chen, and SWA San Francisco’s Yu-Chung Li. The tour visited both new and historic sites, from the Central Subway Station to Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground, from Ping Yuen Housing to Portsmouth Square, highlighting the community’s activism, land-use planning, and city investment that have supported and sustained Chinatown.
