AIA Conference on Architecture 2023 is coming to San Francisco June 7-10. Partners Kevin Conger and Willett Moss join our clients and collaborators to explore resilient design strategies, nature-based solutions, and placekeeping on CMG’s leading local projects.
Thursday, June 8, 2023 / Waterfront Resilience: Adaptation Strategies for Flood & Seismic Risks
San Francisco’s vulnerability to coastal floods and seismic activity will only increase in the future, threatening buildings, small businesses, jobs, transportation, and other critical services. This session will discuss the challenges and opportunities of the Port of San Francisco’s Waterfront Resilience Program (WRP), which seeks to improve and rejuvenate the waterfront while mitigating flood and earthquake risks through large-scale coastal adaptations. The discussion will highlight the adaptation strategies being considered by the WRP team and external stakeholders and explore the combination of approaches needed to address the different vulnerabilities, topography, and historic development present on the San Francisco waterfront.
Panel:
- Kevin Conger, Founding Partner, CMG Landscape Architecture
- Samantha Rose, Associate, TEF Design
- Guneet Anand, Senior Associate, SITELAB Urban Studio
- Adam Varat, Waterfront Resilience Program Deputy Program Manager, Planning, Port of San Francisco
Thursday, June 8, 2023 / Chinatown: Sustaining Cultural Identity & Place
The oldest Chinatown in North America, San Francisco’s Chinatown remains a vibrant and thriving community over a century and a half since its founding. This resiliency is no accident. Community activism, land-use planning, and city investment have supported Chinatown through real estate booms, recessions, shifting political landscapes, and other events that can destabilize identity-based communities over time. On this tour, you’ll visit both new and historic sites, from the Central Subway Station to Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground, from Ping Yuen Housing to Portsmouth Square. You’ll experience firsthand how activism, policy, planning, and design have sustained the community and place that are Chinatown.
Panel:
- Willett Moss, Founding Partner, CMG Landscape Architecture
- Emily Gosack, Principal, Jensen Architects
